چکیده

Shade tolerance is a key adaptive strategy displayed by heliophytic photosynthetic organisms in response to limited light. Although generalized morphological and physiological traits associated with shade tolerance exist, the interest in shade tolerance has been expanding over the past few years due primarily to the controversies that have emerged on classical hypotheses of shade tolerance. In this paper the shade responses of unicellular excavate Euglena gracilis is discussed. Euglena was photoautotrophically grown under three different light intensities; 28, 84 and 210 μmol m s. Results revealed that E. gracilis is a shade tolerant species which exhibits some typical shade tolerant responses such as decrease in growth rate, light saturation point, light compensation point and dark respiration rate, and increased chlorophyll content. Most importantly, it is reported for the first time that the shade tolerance of this organism is also characterized by the increased chlorophyll a:b ratio, contradicting the generally accepted hypothesis of decreased chlorophyll a:b in shade tolerance response. The probable reasons for increased chlorophyll a:b ratio in E. gracilis under shade are also discussed.

Studies on Chloroplast Development and Replication in Euglena: III. A Study of the Site of Synthesis of Alkaline Deoxyribonuclease Induced during Chloroplast Development in Euglena gracilis.

During chloroplast development in Euglena, the activity of a specific DNase, Euglena alkaline DNase, increases in a manner similar to that of chlorophyll synthesis, but without the lag customarily associated with the early hours of chlorophyll synthesis. The increase in Euglena alkaline DNase activity is not inhibited by chloramphenicol or by streptomycin, but is inhibited by cycloheximide. Eug...

Lipid metabolism of manganese-deficient algae. I. Effect of manganese deficiency on the greening and the lipid composition of Euglena gracilis Z.

The growth of photoautotrophic Euglena gracilis Z is strongly inhibited by manganese deficiency, whereas chlorophyll formation is not appreciably affected. The galactosyldiglyceride content of the manganese-deficient photo-autotrophic Euglena was about 40% lower on the basis of either chlorophyll content or dry weight. When dark-grown cultures of Euglena were grown photoheterotrophically in lig...

Chlorophyll Formation and Photosynthetic Competence in Euglena During Light-Induced Chloroplast Development in the Presence of 3, (3,4-dichlorophenyl) 1,1-Dimethyl Urea (DCMU).

The possibility that photosynthetic competence is gratuitous for light-induced chloroplast development in Euglena gracilis var. bacillaris was examined by incubating dark-grown resting cells in the light with DCMU, an inhibitor of photosynthesis. Under these conditions photosynthetic carbon dioxide fixation was inhibited essentially completely at all times during chloroplast development, but ab...

Circadian synthesis of light-harvesting-chlorophyll-proteins in Euglena gracilis is under translational control.

Two proteins with apparent molecular masses of 17 and 24 kD that are synthesized in a circadian manner in the phytoflagellate Euglena gracilis, were recognized as proteins belonging to the family of light-harvesting-chlorophyll-proteins (LHCPs) of class I (17 kD) and of class II (24 kD). Identification was achieved by N-terminal sequencing of the proteins isolated from two-dimensional polyacryl...

Chlorophyll-Protein Complexes from Euglena gracilis and Mutants Deficient in Chlorophyll b: I. Pigment Composition.

The use of n-octyl-beta-d-glucopyranoside along with sodium dodecyl sulfate improves the retention of chlorophyll (Chl) by chlorophyll-protein complexes (CPs) prepared from thylakoids of Euglena gracilis Klebs var bacillaris Cori and yields several additional complexes. Thylakoids from wild-type (WT) cells, solubilized in these detergents and subjected to polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis at 0...
